What is Coaching? The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” A coach partners with a person to help them clarify their goals, identify obstacles that are holding them back, and then map out strategies for overcoming those obstacles. A coach helps their clients utilize their personal creative energy and resourcefulness to facilitate change and realize more of their potential.

Is Coaching the same as therapy? No. Therapists focus on healing, treating mental health conditions, and helping people work through trauma and other issues from their past. Coaching looks to the future and is action oriented. The focus is on where the client is right now, where they want to be next, and how to get them there.
-
Is Coaching the same as consulting? No. A consultant is usually an expert in a particular area. They are expected to give recommendations and advice, and solve problems. Typically a consultant doesn’t get involved in fields outside his/her area of expertise. A coach, on the other hand, partners with a client to examine the situation, clarify goals, create a plan of action and work side by side to resolve issues. The coach collaborates with the client to create a solution using the client’s knowledge and answers.
-
Is Coaching the same as mentoring? No. A mentor is generally an expert in their field who passes on their wisdom and knowledge, offering guidance and advise. A coach’s job is to gather information in the co-created process of change. The coach asks questions from a curious stance that will provoke thought in a growth-oriented direction of the client’s choosing.
-
What is the Coaching process?Coaching is a solution focused practice, with the goal being to support the client in creating more of the type of life they want to live. A coach’s job is to move a client from where they are now to where they want to be, and to do that in a way that allows the client to take the reins and direct the process so the client will own the solutions. The coach helps the client set the intention for the session, identify goals, bring forward challenges, and determine actions to move forward.
-
How long does the Coaching process take? That depends entirely upon the individual. The length of the Coaching process varies a great deal and depends on a number of factors: Your goals Your ability to look inward and thing deeply about your current situation Your level of commitment Your circumstances Your openness to change However, it is not our agenda to keep you as a client for an extended period of time. The goal is to help you reach your goals and learn how to move forward on your own as new challenges arise. Ultimately, you decide how long the process takes.
